Key features of the 113 type one are not only the ornate knobs, side adjuster wheel, pointed sole brackets and 1877 patents stamped in the cutter which this plane has; but also the frog cutter adjustment with two apertures and two piece screw system at the cutter and cap iron to fit those apertures; A feature that is seldom seen although documented by John Walter and others...This plane has that also...
This plane also has the unique "type one" difference in the dovetail lug that secures the sole to the body. The Lug, along with the sole plate protrudes about 1/16" beyond the cast iron body, necessitating a small clearance grind at the lug (as can be seen in this plane and the early illustration shown in the last picture here) for the gears to clear the lug when the sole is adjusted to the concave cut mode.
Later versions of the 113 which may be thought to be type one, have the 1879 pat. stamp on the lug. The 113 was made from 1877 to 1942. This plane I have here is pre-1879 because the lug/sole is wider and it bears no 1879 stamp.
So, here we have a First-Run Stanley No. 113. A true "Type One"
Even better than all that is the condition of the tool. I found it in a custom made wooden box, stored in a low humidity environment. The plane was obviously oiled occasionally throughout the years because it has emerged after nearly 150 years with such little aging it defies belief. I've done nothing to it other than the occasional Jojoba oil rub down. Japanning and plating is all original and very much intact, with the occasional ding and scratch. The cutter has seen some sharpening with little loss of steel.
