Description
ECE No 249 39 Wooden Block Plane39mm (1 1/2″) Iron bedded at 50 degrees.
Plane body 150mm x 52 x 70mm
Hornbeam body, Lignum Vitae sole self-lubricates with use.
I was given this when it was new and never used it really. This one has been in its box most of its life, which I believe began sometime in the early 1980s. It has been used a couple of times, but not much. Overall in nice condition, but not brand new, so a little rust staining on the blade and some dirt and dust to give it character. I don’t see any chips, dents or broken areas. There is a hiccup in how the throat was cut during manufacturing, see photos. Looks like some paint on the palm rest and on 1 side, but this should clean up with some thinner on a rag.
E.C.E No.249P, Small Block Plane is designed to be lightweight and versatile, while still being engineered to ECE's legendary standards.
It’s comfortable in your hand, easy to use, sharpen, and adjust. It features a self-lubricating Lignum Vitae sole and
a palm rest, which makes this plane very comfortable to use.
A beautiful, lightweight, precision hand tool.
Wooden hand planes are a viable alternative to metal planes with mechanical adjusters. In a world full of metal planes, The ECE wood body planes provide elegant simplicity by providing time-tested German design coupled with modern manufacturing methods and materials. The plane iron is adjusted to very precise tolerances by a simple tap of the iron for a deeper cut. A tap on the heel of the plane reduces the cut. Tap the wedge to lock the adjustment and off you go. This simple process is still in use around the world and preferred by many craftsmen as an alternative to mechanical adjusters. Wooden planes are also easier to tune and maintain than their metal counterparts.
